Swirl Marks on Your Car: What Causes Them and How to Remove Them

By Ace Auto Detailing · Published · 3 min read

Park your car in direct sunlight and look at the paint from an angle. If you see a web of fine, circular scratches that catch the light, those are swirl marks. They are one of the most common reasons a car’s paint looks dull, even when it is clean.

What swirl marks actually are

Car paint has a clear top layer. Swirl marks are microscopic scratches in that clear layer, running in all directions. Each one is tiny, but together they scatter the light that should reflect cleanly off the paint, so the colour looks flatter and the gloss looks weaker. Dark colours show them the most.

What causes swirl marks

  • Dirt dragged across the paint. Washing or wiping a car that still has grit on it pulls that grit across the surface like fine sandpaper.
  • Dry wiping. Dusting a dirty car with a dry cloth or duster is one of the fastest ways to scratch it.
  • Dirty or rough washing tools. Old sponges, a mitt that has dropped on the ground, or a worn cloth hold onto grit and carry it back onto the paint.
  • Automatic brush car washes. The brushes clean many cars in a row and can hold grit from the last one. See our guide on whether automatic car washes are bad for paint.
  • Drying with the wrong towel. A rough towel or rubbing hard while drying adds scratches to a surface that was clean.

Swirl marks, oxidation or a deep scratch?

Not every paint problem is a swirl mark, and the fix depends on which one you have.

  • Swirl marks: fine, circular or web-like scratches that show in sunlight and nearly vanish in shade.
  • Oxidation: paint that looks faded, chalky or hazy, often on flat panels like the roof and bonnet that get the most sun.
  • Deep scratches: a single line you can catch with a fingernail. These go through the clear layer and may be beyond what polishing can safely remove.

A machine polish deals with the first two. For the third, polishing can make the scratch less obvious, but we will be straight with you about what is realistic.

Which cars show swirl marks the most?

Dark colours show them most, because the contrast between the scratches and the deep colour is stronger. Black, dark blue and dark grey cars can look hazy long before a white or silver car shows the same damage. Cars that spend years parked outside and get washed with the wrong tools collect them faster. Even a newer car can have swirl marks from the way it was washed before you bought it.

How to avoid adding more

  1. Rinse the car thoroughly first so the loose grit is gone before anything touches the paint. A snow foam pre-wash helps with this, as we explain in our snow foam vs regular wash guide.
  2. Use clean, soft microfibre for washing and drying, and never reuse a cloth that has fallen on the floor.
  3. Wash from the top down and rinse your mitt often.
  4. Avoid dry wiping. If the car is dusty, rinse it first.

How machine polishing removes swirl marks

Once swirl marks are there, washing more carefully will not remove them. They are cut into the clear layer, so the surface itself has to be refined. A machine polish does this: a polisher with the right pad and polish levels the clear layer so the scratches are removed or made far less visible, and the gloss and depth come back.

That is what our machine polish does: it removes swirls and oxidation and restores gloss and depth.

Three myths about swirl marks

  • "A good wash will fix them." Washing cleans the surface. It cannot remove scratches that are in the paint.
  • "Only old cars have them." Any car can pick them up, including a new one, if it is washed or dried badly.
  • "They only come from accidents." Most come from everyday washing and wiping, not from anything dramatic.

Is it worth polishing your car?

If your paint looks dull, hazy or covered in fine scratches even when it is clean, a machine polish is usually the step that makes the biggest visible difference. It is also worth doing before you sell. Send us photos on WhatsApp and we will tell you what we can see.

Quick answers

Common questions.

Can swirl marks be removed?

Light swirl marks can usually be removed or greatly reduced with a machine polish. Deeper scratches may extend beyond what can safely be polished out.

How much does a machine polish cost in Cape Town?

Machine polishing at Ace is from R900, depending on the vehicle and the paint’s condition.

Do swirl marks come back?

They can, if the car is washed or dried in ways that scratch the paint again. Gentle washing habits keep a polished finish looking good for longer.
