How to Protect Your Car From the Cape Town Sun

By Ace Auto Detailing · Published · 3 min read

Cape Town is beautiful, and the sun that makes it so is hard on cars. Long summer days of strong UV and heat work on every surface of a car that is parked outside. The damage is slow, which is why many owners only notice it when it has already happened. Here is what the sun does and how to protect against it.

What the sun does to your car

  • Paint. UV and heat break down the clear layer, which leaves the paint faded, dull or chalky. We explain this in our guide to faded paint and oxidation.
  • Headlights. Plastic lenses yellow and cloud as their protective layer wears away. See why headlights turn yellow.
  • Interior. Dashboards, seats and trim fade, dry out and can crack after years of sun through the windows.
  • Plastic and rubber trim. It dries out and fades to grey.
  • Heat. A parked car heats up quickly, which is uncomfortable and puts extra strain on the air conditioning.

Protect the paint

  • Park in a garage, covered parking or shade whenever you can.
  • Keep the car clean. Dirt and bird droppings that bake on in the sun damage the surface faster.
  • Wash gently, following our method for washing without scratching.
  • If the paint is already faded or hazy, a machine polish restores the gloss. Treat it early, before the damage goes deeper.

Protect the interior

  • Use a sun shade on the windscreen when you park outside. It keeps the dashboard and front seats out of direct sun.
  • Consider window tinting. Tint reduces the UV and heat that come through the windows, which is hard on interiors.
  • Keep the interior clean. Dust and dirt wear fabric faster, and a clean surface is easier to look after.

Protect the headlights

Park out of direct sun where you can, wash the lenses with a soft cloth, and avoid harsh cleaners. If they have already started to yellow, headlight restoration (R400) removes the yellowing and improves clarity and safety.

How window tinting helps

Window tinting gives you privacy, UV protection and a cooler interior, which is exactly what a car needs in a sunny city. It is also one of the few protective measures that works while you are driving as well as when you are parked. Our window tinting is R1,500, and we confirm what it covers for your vehicle when you message us. Read more in our guide to window tint, heat and UV.

A simple summer routine

  1. Park in shade or under cover whenever possible.
  2. Use a windscreen sun shade when you cannot.
  3. Wash the car regularly, and remove bird droppings quickly.
  4. Look at the headlights and the paint a couple of times a year, and treat problems early.
  5. Think about tint if the inside of your car gets very hot.

Quick wins you can do today

  • Put a sun shade in the windscreen.
  • Move the car into shade or under cover for the hottest part of the day.
  • Wipe bird droppings off as soon as you see them.
  • Check your headlights and paint in daylight and note anything yellow or faded.

When to get help

If the paint is already hazy, a machine polish restores it. If the whole car needs a reset after a long, sunny summer, the full valet detail covers the inside, outside, wheels and tyres, and dressing. Send us photos on WhatsApp and we will point you to the right service.

A seasonal checklist

  • Before summer: wash and check the paint and headlights, and fit a sun shade.
  • During summer: park in shade, wash regularly and wipe off bird droppings quickly.
  • After summer: look for faded paint, yellowing headlights and dry, dull trim, and treat them early.

Small habits make the biggest difference here. A few seconds spent parking in shade or fitting a sun shade each day does more over a few years than any single job, and it costs nothing.

Quick answers

Common questions.

Does window tint protect my car’s interior from fading?

Tint reduces the UV and heat that come through the windows, which are major causes of interior fading and drying out. How much difference you see depends on the film and the vehicle.

Do windscreen sun shades work?

They keep direct sun off the dashboard and front seats while you are parked, and they help reduce how hot the cabin gets.

How much does window tinting cost in Cape Town?

Window tinting at Ace is R1,500. Message your vehicle’s make, model and year on WhatsApp to confirm what it covers.
