Window tinting is a thin film applied to your car’s windows. People choose it for three main reasons: it makes the car cooler, it blocks harmful UV, and it gives you privacy. Here is how each one works, and what to check before you book.
A cooler interior
Sunlight coming through clear windows heats the inside of a parked car quickly. Tint film reduces how much of that energy gets in, so the cabin is cooler when you return and the air conditioning has less work to do. How big the difference is depends on the film and the vehicle.
UV protection
Ultraviolet light fades and dries out dashboards, seats and trim over time. It also reaches you and your passengers through the windows while you drive. Quality tint film blocks a large share of UV, which helps protect both the interior and the people in the car.
Privacy
Tinted windows make it harder for people outside to see into the car. That means bags and belongings are less visible, and you can feel more private in traffic.
Less glare
Tint also takes some of the harshness out of bright sunshine, which makes driving into low sun a little easier on the eyes.
Who benefits most from tint
- Drivers who park outside in the sun and come back to a very hot car.
- Families who want less sun on children in the back seat.
- Commuters who spend a lot of time in traffic and want more privacy.
- Anyone protecting an interior they do not want to see fade.
After the tint goes on
New tint film needs time to settle. Your installer will tell you how long to wait before rolling the windows down and how to look after the film. In general, clean tinted windows with a soft cloth and an ammonia-free cleaner, because harsh products and rough cloths can damage the film.
What to check before you tint
- The rules. There are limits on how dark vehicle windows may be on public roads, and they can differ by window. Check what applies before choosing a darkness.
- What you want most. Heat, privacy or both. Tell the installer so they can advise.
- What the price includes. Ask exactly which windows are covered.
- Your vehicle. Make, model and year can change the job.
